Direct Subsurface Absorption of Hydrogen on Pd(111). Typeset Using Revt E X

چکیده
We summarize and discuss some of the available experimental and theoretical data important for understanding the role played by subsurface sites in dissociative chemisorption calculations for the H2/Pd(111) system. Then we use a semi-empirical potential energy surface (PES) to model the interaction of a H2 molecule impinging on a Pd(111) surface. The London-Eyring-Polanyi-Sato (LEPS) construction has been extended to make direct subsurface absorption possible. A 2-dimensional wave packet calculation is used to find qualitative trends in the direct subsurface absorption and to reveal the time scales involved. We suggest that a partial in-plane relaxation occurs for the slowest incoming particles, thus resulting in a higher direct subsurface absorption probability for low energies. 68.35.Ja,82.20.Wt,82.20.Kh,82.65.Pa Typeset using REVTEX ∗Present address: Theoretische Chemie, Vrije Universiteit, De Boelelaan 1083, 1081 HV Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Hydrogen Adsorption and Absorption with Pd−Au Bimetallic Surfaces
Pd−Au bimetallic catalysts have shown promising performance in numerous reactions that involve hydrogen. Fundamental studies of hydrogen interactions with Pd−Au surfaces could provide useful insights into the reaction mechanisms over Pd−Au catalysts, which may, in turn, guide future catalyst design. In this study, the interactions of hydrogen (i.e., adsorption, absorption, diffusion, and desorp...
متن کاملAdsorption and diffusion of hydrogen on Pd(211) and Pd(111): Results from first-principles electronic structure calculations
We have carried out first-principles calculations of H adsorption on Pd 211 using density-functional theory with the generalized gradient approximation in the plane-wave basis to find out that the most preferred is the threefold hollow site on the terrace of Pd 211 with an adsorption energy of 0.52 eV: the hcp and fcc sites being almost energetically equally favorable. For subsurface H adsorpti...
متن کاملRole of low-coordinated surface sites in olefin hydrogenation: a molecular beam study on Pd nanoparticles and Pd(111).
Hydrogenation of unsaturated hydrocarbon compounds catalyzed by transition metals is traditionally believed to be a structure-insensitive reaction. However, recent progress in understanding the microscopic details of this process challenges the universality of this common belief. Recently, several examples of catalytic systems were described in the literature where hydrogenation of the olefinic...

Electronic structure of NiS2−xSex system has been investigated for various compositions (x) using x-ray photoemission spectroscopy. An analysis of the core level as well as the valence band spectra of NiS2 in conjunction with many-body cluster calculations provides a quantitative description of the electronic structure of this compound. With increasing Se content, the on-site Coulomb correlatio...
متن کاملSubsurface Hydrogen Diffusion into Pd Nanoparticles: Role of Low- Coordinated Surface Sites and Facilitation by Carbon
Hydrogen species absorbed in the volume of Pd nanoparticles play a crucial role in the hydrogenation of unsaturated hydrocarbons. Recent evidence suggests that the rate of diffusion of hydrogen from the surface of Pd nanoparticles to the subsurface region critically affects the hydrogenation rate, as this rate dictates whether or not the nanoparticles can maintain a sufficient concentration of ...
